One Handed Games Online: Free Games for One Hand

A surprising amount of gaming happens with one hand occupied. Standing on a train holding a rail. Sitting with a cup of tea. Lying down at an angle where the other arm is trapped. Feeding a baby at three in the morning, which is probably the single largest use case nobody designs for.

Most games fail this quietly. They do not say they need two hands, they just put a control in the top left corner of a large phone and assume you can reach it.

This is a list of one handed games you can play online for free, why each one works with a single thumb, and the ones to avoid when your other hand is busy.

What one-handed actually requires

Three things, and games fail on different ones.

• Every control within thumb reach. That means the lower two thirds of the screen. The top corners of a modern phone are out of reach for most thumbs, and a game that puts a pause button up there is not a problem, but a game that puts a gameplay control there is.
• One input at a time. No pinch to zoom, no hold one thing while dragging another, no virtual joystick plus a fire button.
• Tolerant timing. A one-handed thumb is less accurate than a two-handed grip, so anything demanding pixel timing turns into frustration.

Portrait orientation helps enormously and is almost a prerequisite. A landscape game assumes a phone held in two hands, and the layout follows from that assumption.

Bubble shooter

Close to perfect for this. You aim by touching where you want the bubble to go, and that is the entire control scheme. One touch, no drag required, no timing at all.

The board sits at the top and the shooter at the bottom, so your thumb only ever works in the comfortable half of the screen.

Bubble Pop Jim plays in portrait and needs nothing but taps.

Block puzzle

Drag a piece from the tray to the board. That is one continuous touch, and there is no timer, so the drag can be as slow and clumsy as your grip requires.

The tray sits at the bottom where the thumb naturally is, and the board is above it. Very little reaching.

Wood Block Jim is the one here, and it has no timer at all, which matters more one-handed than it sounds.

Match 3

Swap two adjacent pieces with a short drag. Short drags are the easiest gesture to do accurately with a thumb.

The weakness is the board size - on a big phone the top row of a match 3 grid can be a stretch. In practice you learn to work the lower half and let gravity bring the rest down, which is good play anyway.

Candy Jim and Candy Sweet Jim both work.

Cube blast

Even simpler than match 3, because it is single taps only. No drag, no direction, no accuracy beyond hitting the right cube.

This is the one to reach for when your grip is genuinely awkward and a drag is not reliable.

Bursty Box Jim is that game.

2048

Swipe in one of four directions. Nothing else, ever.

Swipes are forgiving - the game only needs to know roughly which direction you moved, so a sloppy one-handed swipe reads the same as a careful one. And with no timer, there is no penalty for a swipe that does not register.

2048 Cube Jim here.

Screw puzzle

Tap a screw to remove it. Single taps again, no timing.

The pieces can be small, which is the one drawback - precision taps are harder with a thumb than an index finger. Still comfortably in the one-handed category.

Screw Puzzle Jim if you want something slower and more deliberate.

Board games, one turn at a time

Turn-based board games are an underrated one-handed option. Nothing happens until you act, so there is never pressure on your thumb.

Ludo is a single tap to roll and a single tap to choose a token. Snakes and ladders is even simpler - one tap to roll and the board does the rest. Both are good when you want something social and slow rather than a puzzle.

Ludo Jim and Snakes and Ladders Jim both run in portrait in the browser.

What does not work one-handed

Worth naming, so you know what to avoid.

• Anything with a virtual joystick. That is one thumb spent before you have done anything.
• Landscape games generally. The layout assumes two hands.
• Snake and io games. They need continuous accurate steering, and the whole point is fine control.
• Anything with a countdown that penalises slow input.

Snake Game Jim is a good game and it is firmly a two-handed one. Save it for when both hands are free.

Set your phone up for one hand

The game is only half of it. Two phone settings make one-handed play noticeably easier.

• Reachability or one-handed mode. On an iPhone, turning on Reachability in the accessibility settings lets you swipe down on the bottom edge to pull the top of the screen within reach. Many Android phones have a one-handed mode that does the same thing or shrinks the screen into a corner.
• Rotation lock. Lock the phone to portrait. Nothing is more annoying than a game flipping sideways because you shifted the way you were holding it.

A quick tip on grip: rest the bottom of the phone on your little finger rather than squeezing the sides. Your thumb gets noticeably more reach, and your hand tires much more slowly.

Why browser games help here

An installed game asks you to find it, wait for a splash screen and dismiss whatever it wants to show you today - all of that with one thumb.

A browser game is a bookmark. Tap it, the game is there, and closing the tab is one tap too. When one hand is busy, the number of taps before the game starts is not a small detail.

Everything listed above runs in a tab, in portrait, with no install.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best one handed games to play online?

Games with a single simple input and no timer: bubble shooters, block puzzles, cube blast, 2048, screw puzzles and match 3. Turn-based board games such as Ludo also work well, because nothing happens until you tap.

Are one handed games free?

Every game in this list is free to play in a browser, with no download and no account needed.

Which games should I avoid with one hand?

Anything with a virtual joystick, anything designed for landscape, snake and io games that need constant steering, and games with a countdown that punishes slow input.

Can I play these games on a tablet with one hand?

Tablets are heavier and wider, so one-handed play is harder. Rest the tablet on your lap or a table and tap with one hand - the tap-only games, like cube blast and bubble shooter, work best that way.

Are one handed games good for accessibility?

Often, yes. Games that use a single input, forgive imprecise touches and have no time pressure are easier for many players with limited hand mobility, as well as for anyone who simply has one hand busy.
