Candy Jim is a match-three puzzle, which means the first level will teach you everything in about fifteen seconds and level ninety will still catch you out. Swap two adjacent sweets, line up three or more, and they clear.

What separates a good match-three from a forgettable one is whether the levels are designed or generated. Ours are designed: each board has a specific objective, a fixed number of moves and a layout built around a particular problem to solve.

The pieces that matter

• Match four in a row to create a striped sweet, which clears an entire line when used.
• Match five to make a colour bomb, which removes every sweet of whichever colour you swap it with.
• Match in an L or T shape for a wrapped sweet, which explodes twice over the surrounding squares.
• Combine two special sweets together for a much larger effect than either produces alone.

How to stop running out of moves

The most common mistake is matching whatever you spot first. Boards are usually solved from the bottom, because clearing low sweets drops everything above them and often sets off matches you did not have to make yourself.

It is also worth reading the objective before your first move. Clearing jelly at the top of a board and collecting ingredients at the bottom call for opposite tactics, and eight wasted moves at the start is normally the difference between finishing a level and repeating it.
