Wood Block Jim is a block puzzle with no timer in it. You are given three wooden shapes at a time, you drag them onto an empty grid, and any row or column you fill completely disappears. When none of the three shapes will fit anywhere, the game is over.

That is the whole rule set, and it is enough. There is nothing to unlock, no energy meter and nothing chasing you. The only pressure is the board slowly filling up because of decisions you made four moves ago.

How to play

• Drag any of the three offered shapes onto the grid.
• Fill a full row or column to clear it.
• Clear more than one line with a single piece to score a combo.
• You must place all three shapes before a new set arrives.
• The game ends when no offered shape fits anywhere on the board.

Playing a longer game

The instinct is to fill whatever gap is nearest. The players who last longest do the opposite: they keep the middle of the board clear and build against the edges, because a hole in the centre blocks pieces from both directions while a hole at the edge only blocks from one.

It is also worth looking at all three shapes before placing any of them. The order you place them in changes what fits, and a five-square line piece has nowhere to go once you have chopped the board into pockets of three.
